Answers to Christain arguments

25th Jan '17

Here are answers and responses to questions and comments made by Christians and Catholics. These answers are to real Christians questions though the answers could relate to multiple topics. Please feel free to edit these answers to fit your context. If you have any questions or answers please comment them below.

“If there is no god then what is the source of morality?”

Morals evolved. The evolution of morals can even be seen throughout the Christian bible itself. What in the past was acceptable is now considered immoral. For example, not too long ago we were putting gay people in mental asylums and jails using the bible to justify it. This is the same with owning slaves, as the bible condones slavery, it was used to justify people’s rights to own slaves.

If the bible was the source of moral code then how would people now know not to do things such as…

  • Rape.
  • kill gay people.
  • Stone children to death for cursing or hitting parents.
  • Own slaves.
  • Have multiple wives.
  • Put people to death for working on Sundays.
  • Kill non-believers.
  • Kill fortune tellers.

As the bible condones and encourages these acts. For example, by giving laws on how to treat slaves and even sell your daughter as one. Yet the majority of modern people would deem these things immoral. If you would like to know more about my references to the bible, please actually read it. Or I can provide you with many verses to the issues referenced.

“Are you scared of a Divine Creator?”

Are you scared of a universe that does not center on mankind (and, by extension, yourself)?

” Why do you hate god ?”

Misotheism is the “hatred of God” or “hatred of the gods”.
Atheism is the lack of beliefe in God or Gods.
As an Atheist, I simply don’t believe in one.

Why do you hate Zeus?

I can’t hate something I don’t believe in. I don’t believe in fairies, dragons, goblins and unicorns, but I don’t hate them either.

“The Old testament is not valid”

If the old testament is not valid then nor is creationism and the ten commandments. And frankly, the second testament is not much better than the first one. Still sexists, discriminates against homosexuals and promoting slavery just to name a few. But worst of all it’s where hell comes into the play and Jesus threatens everyone with going to hell. According to the bible, someone like me could do all the good in the world but still end up in hell simply for not worshiping a God of which there is no evidence for. No moral god would threaten people with eternal torture and suffering. Unconditional love shouldn’t come with a list of conditions.

Also, Jesus says to follow the 1st and 2nd testament, it’s still valid, and there are verses that say this.

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.  I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.  Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest part or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place.” (Matthew 5:17 NAB)

“It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid.”  (Luke 16:17 NAB)

“For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass the law until all is accomplished.  Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:18-19 RSV) Clearly the Old Testament is to be abided by until the end of human existence itself.  None other then Jesus said so.

“All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness…”  (2 Timothy 3:16 NAB)

“Know this first of all, that there is no prophecy of scripture that is a matter of personal interpretation, for no prophecy ever came through human will; but rather human beings moved by the holy Spirit spoke under the influence of God.” (2 Peter 20-21 NAB)

Jesus criticizes the Jews for not killing their disobedient children according to Old Testament law.
“Whoever curses father or mother shall die”  (Mark 7:10 NAB)

Jesus is criticized by the Pharisees for not washing his hands before eating.  He defends himself by attacking them for not killing disobedient children according to the commandment:  “He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.  (Matthew 15:4-7)

Jesus has a punishment even worse than his father concerning adultery: God said the act of adultery was punishable by death. Jesus says looking with lust is the same thing and you should gouge your eye out, better a part, than the whole.  The punishment under Jesus is an eternity in Hell.  (Matthew 5:27)

“Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law” (John7:19) and  “For the law was given by Moses,…” (John 1:17).

“…the scripture cannot be broken.” –Jesus Christ, John 10:35

Have you even read your own bible ?

“Where do you derive objective meaning in life?”

The universe doesn’t owe us an explanation, it’s up to the individual to find their own meaning to life. But this is irrelevant to the question of whether evolution is true or not and does God exist. Should we try and shape facts to fit a certain philosophy, or figure out the facts and consider how this affects our worldview?

Creationist arguments

“It takes more faith to believe in evolution.” Or “Science is a religion that requires faith” along those lines.

Science is the exact opposite of faith. Faith is believing in something without evidence or question. Science is about asking questions and seeking evidence.

If you got sick would you
a) Pray to your god to get better
b) Take Medicine created by Science to treat your illness.
You can only pick one.
If you value faith over science so much, next time you’re sick go to a church instead of the doctors.

“Why can’t I pick both?” <they always say that
No, you can’t do both because you’ll credit God for the medicine working even though you should be thanking Science instead.  And if prayer actually worked you would not need the medicine.

“I’m not an ape, I don’t believe in Evolution.”

Why is it that people can still believe a male god made man from dirt and eve from a rib to worship him 6000 years ago, which has absolutely no evidence or logic, yet shun the fact of gradual changes over millions of years through natural selection in a process called evolution, which is backed by overwhelming and undeniable scientific evidence. No matter what you believe the earth is not 6000 years old and you are a product of evolution, facts still remain facts whether you believe them or not. Your inability to understand evolution is not evidence against it. I suggest not forming an opinion on something until you have heavily researched it.

“Evolution has no evidence”

The evidence is overwhelming and undeniable, It can be observed within in biology, paleontology, molecular biology, genetics, anthropology, physical evidence within DNA as well as fossilized evidence. Evolution is a fact and is taught in all public educational facilities. Your inability to understand evolution is not evidence against it. Please educate yourself.

“Where did the single cell organism come from?”

Here is a short easy to understand video that can explain that for you 🙂

“If we come from monkeys then why are there still monkeys?”

That question is so dumb it’s on the creationist lists of questions not to ask. You think in over 150 years of scientific research scientists wouldn’t have an intelligent answer to that stupid question?  ( < optional intro)

Humans are not direct descendants of modern monkeys or apes; we both evolved from a common ancestor. Evolution isn’t a straight line from one organism to the next, it’s more like a great branching tree. Groups split off in natural selection and gradually adapt to survive in their environment over millions of years.

“How can you look at the world and not believe someone created / thought of it? It’s Amazing!!!”

Most scientists find evolution pretty amazing and beautiful! It’s exciting to think about how life in all its vast, varied beauty and terror, has changed over billions of years – and how it might change in future eons.

“What is the meaning of life?” (Evolution has no meaning argument OR without god there is no purpose to life )

This question is irrelevant to the larger question of whether evolution is true or not. If life after death is so much better then living has no purpose. Life is precious and we are lucky to be here, it’s up to the individual to discover there own meaning to life.

“If God did not create everything, how did the first single-celled organism originate? By chance?”

Yes, sort of. But keep in mind that evolution isn’t like the roll of a single die that is Life or No Life. It’s more like trillions upon trillions of dice being rolled for billions of years. The conditions of early Earth happened to weight some of those dice in such a way that Life came up. And scientists don’t think that a single-celled organism just suddenly popped into being. Simple molecules can arise spontaneously in the right conditions – experiments show that it’s possible to whip up a big batch of amino acid soup from the conditions existing on early Earth, perhaps sparked by lightning storms or through undersea chemical reactions near hydrothermal vents. Over time, aggregates of these molecules formed and developed protective coatings, and began finding new ways to replicate themselves.

“There is no in between fossil?… the only one found has been Lucy and there are only a few pieces of the hundreds necessary for an ‘official proof’.”

Simply false. There are thousands of hominid fossils that have been discovered – not all direct ancestors of Homo sapiens, but cousins of a sort. (“Lucy,” the nickname for a 3.2 million year old Austrolopithecus afarensis specimen discovered in 1974, is still a pretty impressive find. Paleontologists managed to find about 40 percent of her skeleton; usually they can only find bits and fragments of individuals.)Also, keep in mind that not every living thing becomes a fossil – they’re actually quite rare. You need very specific conditions for fossilization to occur. The Earth is also very big, and paleontologists have only dug up an incredibly small fraction of it.

“If Evolution is a Theory (like creationism or the Bible) why then is Evolution taught as fact.”

The idea that diseases are caused by germs is a theory too, yet most medical schools tend to spend much more time on antibiotics and hygiene than on faith healing. “theory” doesn’t mean “a bunch of wild ideas that Richard Dawkins and Bill Nye cooked up after a late night at the pub”; it means an explanation supported by massive amounts of physical evidence and logic, tested and weighed and re-tested and scrutinized by scientists across the world. Creationism is not a scientific theory. A scientific theory can be altered or disposed of if new, convincing evidence arises; creationism ignores or selectively misinterprets existing scientific evidence in favor of preserving the assumption of a divine creator.

“I believe in the Big Bang Theory… God said it and BANG it happened!”

Nowhere in creationism does he say bang, go read it.

God also said he made the sun after he made the earth, air, plants and water so that’s invalid (because it’s impossible, these things can’t exist without the sun)

God of the gaps.  The, Science does not know, there for God argument Or “God caused the big bang”
We don’t have to know the right answer to recognize the wrong answer. Science is the exact opposite of faith. Faith is believing in something without evidence or question. Science is about asking questions and seeking evidence. We know allot about the world through the processes of research, mathematics, testing and evidence. If your personal beliefs deny what’s objectively true about the world, they’re more accurately called personal delusions.

The God of the gaps is simply an argument of ignorance that places a supernatural entity as the cause of what science is yet to discover. God seems to help many cope with the unsatisfying prospect of an event without a known cause, such as the big bang. The problem of course is that one is immediately forced to asked, from were did the creator come? If the answer is “he always existed” then we have a situation, from a causality standpoint, that is no more satisfying than a universe that springs forth from nothing. A creator that has always existed is an entity that somehow exists without a cause. So this answer doesn’t solve the causality issue what so ever.

There is also no feasible evidence for the existence of a god or any reason to think such a thing exists from a scientific and logical standpoint. Science can’t allow its calculations, evidence, and findings to be muddled by belief in a supernatural creator, no reasonable person does. Hence why science could never put god into the equation, they don’t just make assumptions without evidence. Science is the body of knowledge, it’s called faith because it isn’t knowledge, and should not be asserted as such.

“How do you explain a sunset if there is no God?”

The Earth rotates on its axis, making it so the sun appears to move through the sky. Once every 24 hours, the center of the solar disc will appear to move below the western horizon. That is a sunset. To go a little further: the various fiery colors in the sky at sunset are caused by light scattering. At sunset, the angle of Earth and Sun is such that the light has to travel through more of our atmosphere to reach your eyes. Shorter wavelengths of light are more likely bounce off of molecules in the atmosphere, so when sunlight has to travel through a longer stretch of air, the bluer end of the spectrum bounces out while other colors continue on. Red has the longest wavelength of visible light, so that’s why the sun usually looks red when it’s right on the horizon – it’s the only color that can make it through all the haze of Earth’s atmosphere at that extreme angle.

“Can you believe in ‘the big bang’ without ‘faith’?”

Yes, because there are multiple lines of evidence supporting the theory. Astronomical observations show that galaxies are moving away from each other, and if we trace their paths backward, it looks as though the Universe was condensed into a single, very hot point billions of years ago. The ratios of hydrogen, helium and other elements throughout the Universe appear to match what we might expect if the Universe was once compressed into a tiny, very hot, very dense point. We haven’t found any stars that appear to be older than 13.8 billion years old. The cosmic background radiation permeating throughout the universe is at the temperature that one would expect from an expanding, cooling universe.

“Relating to the big bang theory… where did the exploding star come from?”

Barring the fact that the Big Bang isn’t quite the same thing as an exploding star—it’s massively hotter, for one thing, and stars explode in space, while the Big Bang created space itself and stretched it — a lot of scientists would like to know this too! One idea, for example, is that the Big Bang was actually the interaction between two vast objects outside of our universe called “branes.” It’s an important question, and a difficult one to explore – but one of the great things about science is that you can always say “I don’t know”; another is to follow that up with “but I’ll try and find out.

“Science can’t disprove Christianity”

Humans evolved over millions of years from a common ancestor as the chimpanzee in a process called natural selection. Given there was at least a group of 10,000 primates that evolved into the human speeches we are today, Adam and Eve were not the first humans and they never even existed. And of course, evolution is backed by a mountain of undeniable scientific evidence which the bible has absolutely none of.

And so, if Eve never ate the evil fruit from the tree then there is no origin of sin. As eve did not eat the fruit the evil talking snake told her to bringing sin into the world, apparently causing every innocent baby to be born a “Sinner”. There is no heaven, hell or reason for Jesus to have sacrificed himself to himself for himself to appease himself. Becuase there is no such thing as sin, and without the origin of sin the entire religion falls apart.
So yeah science can actually disprove Christianity.

Can a God be scientifically disproven ? No.
Can a God be scientifically proven ? No.
Can fairies and dragons be scientifically disproven ? No.
